It took me a while to wrap my head around this one.
This is similar to someone forming an opinion and then cherry picking the scriptures to find support for that opinion instead of analysing the scriptures in the context of the history and culture of the time it was written.
The Star Spangled Banner…was written during the war of 1812. That war was with Britain. The british were desparate to win the war so they turned about 6000 blacks to their side with the offer of freedom.
Here is the verse that most leftists use to support their misguided interpretation:
“No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight or the gloom of the grave,
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave.”
The verse in question, is referring to those 6000 who abandoned the Union Forces and fought on behlf of the British. Yes they were slaves but they were also on the British side. It is to them that the verse is referring, not because of the color of their skin nor because they were slaves, but because they were part of the enemy forces.
